There is one essential secret to how to create an online store that is sucessfull. Can you guess what it is?
The secret is traffic. Without traffic your store will do nothing. Gone are the days when you could just create an online store and hope that Google and other search engines will find you. It doesn't work that way, it takes time and effort to get good search engine rankings but they are essential to building an online store and getting enough traffic. These days it is so easy to create an online store that everyone is doing it, but what separates the winners from the losers is the amount of traffic.
Imagine if you decided to build a beautiful store out in the middle of the desert. There are no roads to your store and no signs. You open up for business sit back happy with the way your store looks and what is inside.
Now imagine instead that you open up in a busy mall in New York City. There are signs everyone telling people about your new store and everyone is talking about how great it is and how knowledgeable you are.
Which store do you think will survive and which store will quickly die out? The New York City mall store with the signs and referrals is going to do better. Most of us don't have the money to open up an actual store like this but you can do the same thing in a way online and with much less cost.
Nearly everyone knows about Amazon, they are the biggest online store on the net. So why would someone decide to buy at your store instead of Amazon? How do you get visitors to your store and how do you get them to trust you?
First you need to make sure you are concentrating on a specific niche product and not trying to be everything to everyone.
Definition of Niche: a distinct segment of a market.
Do not try to be like Amazon and sell everything at once, it just won't work. Amazon has billions of dollars to spend on advertising and branding and do it all, you on the hand other most likely have a shoestring budget when you are getting started.
Try typing in something like "online store" into Googles search engine, you get 252,000,000 results. Now try typing something much more specific, ie "kids educational toys" and instead you get 211,000 results. The more specific query is finding about 8% of the results of the first query. Would you rather compete for a listing on the first query or the second? It's going to be easier to get listed under the second more specific query.
Some niches are more popular and thus more crowded then others. The more crowded with competitors the harder it will be for you to rank well. For instance something like weight loss is much more overrun with websites then butterfly collecting but there is also most likely more people searching about weight loss then butteryfly collecting.
Choosing the right niche with the right amount of supply and demand can mean the difference between a successfull website and a complete failure.
How do you show up on page 1 and not page 10 for your specific query and how do you even know what niche to choose?
Everyday Google sends millions of visitors to sites all across the net. How do you become one of those lucky sites? The key is writing good quality content. In order to write good content you should choose a topic that you are truly interested in, knowledgeable about, and have a lot to write on. If you have good content people will link to your content and Google will find you. The more people who like your content, the higher relevancy Google will give you and the better your search engine position. A better search engine position leads to increased traffic.
